Heidi Urbanski
Everyday Angels
Heidi started making stained glass because it reminds her of her mom who passed away 10 years ago. Now Heidi's mother is her muse, and her children's guardian angel.
"My Mom was a very talented artist," Heidi recalls." She made stained glass, pottery, and jewelry. She worked with fused glass and made pendants, did custom stained glass windows, and made beautiful bowls and vases. After she died, it took me years to even be able to look at her work without crying. It never even crossed my mind to try it."
That all changed when she met Staci Egan. Staci suggested that the two of them try working with stained glass. Heidi had all of her mother's supplies and tools packed away and a soldering iron that her mother-in-law had sent her.
Of her first stained glass creation, Heidi said, "I made the most hideous flower you have ever seen!" But then Heidi started playing with the glass, saw an angel, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Heidi uses the copper foil technique and uses pieces of glass that she finds or that no one else wants — a type of craft recycling — then wraps it in copper foil, adds flux and begins soldering.
Creating her stained glass items is a visual and tactile experience for Heidi. "It starts in my imagination," she said, "and ends with my finished, tangible piece of art."
She adds, "I hope looking at the piece you purchase brings you as much happiness as it brought me when I was creating it."
